As another winter storm approaches many hardware stores in Dutchess County are running low or even out of the commonly used rock salt. As Time Warner Cable News Reporter Michael Howard tells us, the demand for it goes way beyond Dutchess County.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- It’s a product that many take with a grain of salt you might say.
That product is rock salt, and at HG Page and Son hardware in Poughkeepsie all you could find of it Wednesday was one drum, which was kept to clear their sidewalk.
“We just had a truck come in on Monday, today’s Wednesday and it’s gone,” said General Manager James Morrison.
Morrison says they’ve sold more than 1,000 bags of rock salt since Monday, and have been getting call after call for it ever since.
“Were getting calls from all over,” said Morrison, “New York City, New Jersey, Westchester because nobody can find product and everybody’s willing to come anywhere to get the product.”
That high demand forced them to limit the sale of any bagged salt to ten bags per customer. Morrison says he’s been working for the company for more than 25 years, and it’s been one of the worst and busiest winters he’s seen.
“Were promised trucks and some come some don’t come and as fast as were getting them in the door, they’re going out the door,” said Morrison.
Just in case you wanted any other snow necessity, their winter isle looks like this. Only a few products left and one shovel, a kid’s shovel that is. As for the future Morrison says he hopes warmer weather isn't far away and if it isn't, customers will be able to find what they're looking for.
“I’m hoping the winter ends soon, and we get more products for our customers.”
