A casino may come to Grossinger’s Resort in Liberty. As Jessica Chen reports, Muss Development wants to develop those 600 acres of land into a state-of-the-art casino.
LIBERTY, N.Y. -- Jeff Kay with Muss Development LLC, and Foxwoods Resort Casino are collaborating to bring a Foxwoods to the site of the former Grossinger's Resort in Liberty.
"We look to probably build predominately on 40 acres and really blend in with the natural scenery there," said Kay.
The proposed project encompass 600 acres owned by Muss Development. They will transform part of it into a 400-bedroom hotel. Camping, picnic grounds, and a sports complex will also be offered at the resort.
The building that used to be Grossinger's would also be demolished as part of the project.
"You have such a beautiful area that's world renowned for being a resort area back in the day, and we're looking to recapture some of that," said Sal Semola, the president Foxwoods Catskill.
Charlie Babuti, the Town of Liberty Supervisor, said the project will provide much needed traffic and jobs to the area.
"We can get gamblers that have been previously going to Connecticut or Pennsylvania to come here and into New York state," said Babuti.
According to the New York State Division of Budget, if the resort casino is built in Sullivan County, they estimate the county and its local governments could receive $13.7 million from its revenue, as well as an additional $1.1 million in state aid for county schools.
On Monday, the developers presented their project to Sullivan County residents as part of their first step in securing approvals needed by Liberty and New York State.
Developers of the project said they are still waiting for their casino license to be approved by the state. They said they anticipate they will be granted the license by early fall.
