NEW YORK STATE -- The New York Army and Air National Guard was involved in more than 11,000 funeral services for military families this year.
Since 2000, federal law has mandated military funerals for veterans.
The ceremony must include the presenting of our country's flag to the veteran's survivors and the playing of Taps.
The New York Honor Guard has performed thousands of funerals every year since the law was passed.
"Most of them, they may have done two years in the army back in World War Two and they got out, they did their service when the country called upon them that was it and some of the families didn't even know at the time of the passing. It takes us reaching out to them and asking if they'd like honors," said Ryan Comstock, United States Army.
In 2013, New York Military Forces Honor Guard participated in about 700 funeral services in the Hudson Valley.
