Fishmeal bait containing rabies vaccine will be dropped in Essex County starting today in an annual effort to maintain a barrier against the disease.
The program targets raccoons with 133,000 doses of vaccine to be dropped from a helicopter, starting at the northeastern end of the Adirondack county then moving south through the week.
Dr. Amy Willsey, a state Health Department veterinarian, said the bait drops target waterways where raccoons are more likely to be foraging.
