ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Port of Albany opens a new facility to welcome seafarers when they come into port in the city.
The Albany Maritime Ministry opened the new Seafarer's Center on Smith Boulevard this weekend.
The ministry works to provide mariners with services they made need after being at sea for so long.
Services include rides to the grocery store, access to Wi-Fi or telephones, and even counseling.
“These mariners they visit ports and as most people know ports are in industrial areas of the city so it's not the best area to visit. They make it a reasonable and enjoyable stay for their time here at port,” said Richard Hendrick, the Port of Albany General Manager.
The new center is part of a port-wide improvement plan.
The Seafarers Center building will also house the Security Center for the Port and the Federal Marine Terminals.
