The Super Bowl may be one of the largest calorie consumption days of the year. But as Carmella Mataloni tells us, it's never too early to start planning for healthier alternatives.
NATIONWIDE -- You may have eaten your fair share of calories on Super Bowl Sunday, but it's important not to beat yourself up over it come Monday morning. Instead of dwelling on the past, health experts suggest looking towards a healthier future.
Some dietitians say switching to a healthier menu during any future Super Bowl parties will make yourself feel better, and also encourage your guests to bring healthier food options too.
Instead of fried chips with a heavy creamy dip, try hummus and salsa with baked chips or pita chips. You could also try baked skinless chicken wings, instead of fried wings. Another simple alternative is to make turkey chili, instead of beef chili.
Alcohol is another factor that adds a lot of calories to your Super Bowl Sunday calorie intake. Dietitians suggest lighter beers, or serving alcohol in smaller glasses. If you're drinking alcohol, be sure to alternate with non-alcoholic beverages.
"If you're feeling kind of guilty after this past Super Bowl party, preventing that for next year and making sure that you can make healthy alternatives to some of the favorite snacks, it just takes a little bit of menu planning," said Ana Yaman, Lourdes Registered Dietitian.
All of these alternatives might seem a little difficult, especially for a big party like the Super Bowl. However, you're not really cutting anything out that you wouldn't normally have. You're just tweeking it a little to make waking up the next morning a little easier.
