Just three days after the Skylane Motel was shut down for code violations, another motel owned by the same landlord is under investigation. Geoff Redick has the latest from the Blu Bell Motel.
COLONIE, N.Y. -- "I don't think you can get much worse," said Colonie town attorney Michael Magiulli on Thursday. "At least, I hope you can't get much worse in the Town of Colonie."
Magiulli had just witnessed a second raid on a motel owned by Anjur "Alex" Patel. The Blu Bell Motel on Central Avenue in Colonie was the subject of a police search after two residents spoke up about horrid living conditions at the Blu Bell: bad electrical wiring, black mold growing in rooms, no heat in most rooms, and toilets and plumbing fixtures frozen solid.
It's a familiar sight for Colonie town code enforcement officers, who just last week forced the shutdown of Patel's other Central Avenue motel, the Skylane. Patel was charged with 254 code violations at Skylane.
"We will be looking for the maximum fines (at Blu Bell and Skylane), mainly because of the condition that these properties were in," said Magiulli Thursday.
At least 14 residents were residing at Blu Bell on Thursday. Only one was removed, for her own safety after investigators discovered gaping holes in her room's floor. The Colonie Town Attorney's office expects to file several hundred more code violations against Anjur Patel for the Blu Bell.
Patel was not seen at the Blu Bell Motel on Thursday. He sent someone else to unlock the rooms for authorities. Patel is due back in court for the Skylane violations in March.
