ALBANY, N.Y. -- Education is the main focus at the joint legislative public hearing on Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget on Tuesday.
During Cuomo's budget speech last week, he pushed universal pre-kindergarten across New York State. Cuomo called for $1.5 billion for the universal program over the next five years. His proposal would spend $100 million in the first year, and target the neediest districts.
Cuomo also discussed the controversial common core education standards. He wants to eliminate the standardized testing for students in kindergarten through second grade.
