It's the final resting place for thousands of people in the Capital Region, but now it's experiencing some "unrest." Geoff Redick has more on the vandalism of headstones at Troy's historic Oakwood Cemetery.
TROY, N.Y. -- In several decades working at Troy's Oakwood Cemetery, Director Bernard Vogel can't remember much vandalism at all.
"There's been a couple or three times over the last 20 years that I can recall," Vogel said in his office Friday. "Unfortunately, most cemeteries experience some vandalism from time to time."
But that doesn't soften the blow dealt to Troy's most famous cemetery last weekend: 108 tombstones were knocked down, broken and otherwise desecrated. The vandalism occurred in one of the oldest sections of the cemetery, dating back to the 1850s.
"It's disheartening," said Vogel, "especially because our dedicated staff reset that entire section this past summer."
That 2013 project involved digging new placements for old, leaning and fallen headstones, as well as repairing previously broken ones. Now, much of that work has been undone. Estimates for repair have climbed into the thousands of dollars.
Troy Police began investigating the report on Monday morning, after cemetery workers discovered the damage.
"The random nature of the damage leads us in the direction of someone who has an axe to grind against the cemetery," Captain John Cooney tells Time Warner Cable News. "There seemed to be an awful lot of energy put into causing the damage. When we see that, we look at it as much more targeted, more of an act of rage or payback to the cemetery."
Cooney says the department has narrowed its investigation, and an arrest appears imminent in the coming days.
Cemetery officials are focused on minimizing any further damage, and are beginning to plan repairs. The process of fixing the damage is expected to take several months.
