An organization that supports cancer patients moves into a much bigger space, to the joy of its visitors. Moments House is moving from its location on Fenn Street to Depot Street in Pittsfield. Time Warner Cable News Reporter Madeleine Rivera has more on the move and what patients are saying about the new space.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- "I was diagnosed in November 2012. I had breast cancer," said Amy Feld.
She remembers the day she was diagnosed with cancer perfectly. Unsure of what was ahead of her, she quickly searched for answers.
"I was looking for support. I was looking for knowledge. You know, you get told you have cancer and what do you do?" said Feld.
She heard by word of a mouth of Moments House, an organization, barely a year old.
"We're a cancer support community," said Alice Trumbull, Co-Founder of Moments.
She and her daughter established Moments in 2011. What started out as an idea to help cancer patients has quickly evolved to a non-profit organization that takes in hundreds of patients each year
"I walked in, and it was like walking into someone's living room," said Feld.
Many have had a similar experience. With the group's expansion came the need for a bigger space. They secured a suite at 34 Depot Street thanks to some generous donations from local organizations. The head of one company offered to pay the rent for one year.
"Everything here has been donated. We've really been blessed. It's because everyone saw there there was a need, and sees it being fulfilled and wants to help," said Trumbull.
Volunteers barely got a free moment Thursday. They spent the day unpacking boxes, organizing shelves, and cleaning the suite.
The new Moments Suite has ten spaces, including a children's play area, a free lending library, as well as a spa room, so they can offer a number of services for their visitors.
"This is a good space. It has really good energy. And, I feel really good about being here," said Trumbull.
For, those who need the services the most, the space is just, "Perfect," said Feld.
Moments plans to open its new space by February.
