Call it a flash freeze. After this afternoon's warmer temps, a dangerously cold blast of air is gripping the capital region making it feel like it's more than 15 below zero. While just the thought of those temps make many want to hibernate, Time Warner Cable News Reporter Maria Valvanis put on her gloves, pulled up her hood, to join us tonight from Albany with the story.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's hard to believe just hours ago many of us had ditched our winter coats for something a little lighter. And now, people are bundling back up waiting for their bus as the temps drop back down... and things are only expected to get chiller.
Time Warner cable Meteorologists are expecting tonight and tomorrow to hit record breaking temps with wind chills making it feel as cold as -15 to -35.
And that bitter cold is expected to stay through much of the week.
Albany is already in Code Blue status tonight through at least Wednesday. And travel conditions are expected to get dangerous.
Because that heavy rain we had this morning washed away most of the salt on the ground, so things could get slippery.
People waiting to catch the bus on State Street tonight have been bundling up trying to stay warm.
A somewhat shocking turn of events from Mother Nature because many of them tell us they were just starting to get used to that milder weather we got a taste of in the last couple of days.
But through the roller coaster weather people are finding ways to stay optimistic.
"It keeps you on your toes but I say it's good to exercise work out eat right it's good to stay warm," said one bus rider. Another said, "All the ice was melting there was water flowing down the street and now it's cold again. Our feet be numb, our fingers be cold."
Now the weather is expected to get so extreme in the western part of the state with heavy snow fall, Governor Cuomo has closed part of the thruway to traffic again, until further notice. So anyone trying to head out to the buffalo or Rochester area are going to be detoured.
But looking on the bright side, meteorologists say a warm front is expected to move in towards the end of the week, with temps possibly reaching the 40s on Saturday. So at least we have a nice weekend to look forward to. Ryan Finn will be coming up on weather on the 1s to give you a closer look at the forecast.
