January is National Blood Donor Month. Our Brad Vivacqua tells us how you can help save a life.
NATIONWIDE -- Red Cross officials say donations are typically low during this time of year, which is why people are encouraged to donate blood during National Blood Donor Month.
In the New York-Penn region, the Red Cross needs to collect nearly 1,200 units of blood to maintain a sufficient supply. The blood is used to help accident victims, trauma patients, and anyone treated at local hospitals.
According to officials, donation only takes 30 minutes of your time, and can help save multiple lives.
"It's a very safe procedure. It's painless. Most people can fill a pint of blood within five minutes," explained Rosie Taravella, Central New York Red Cross Regional CEO. "And, you can save up to three lives with every pint of blood that you donate. And, that's a really great feeling. It's an amazing feeling to know that you helped save a life."
All month you can also find the "Give a Pint, Get a Pound" campaign at local Dunkin Donuts stores.
All current and new donors are encouraged to call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment. You can also visit www.redcrossblood.org for more information about donating.
