SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Congressman Paul Tonko's annual Mighty Waters Conference comes nearly a year after Tropical Storm Irene and the remnants of Lee pounded New York State. Local business owners, developers, community leaders and college students attended the conference.
The key focus was on how to maximize the potential of the waterways of the Upper Hudson, Mohawk rivers and the Erie Canal.
Tonko says the Mighty Waters initiative is a regional strategy.
"This just isn't about boaters. This is about pedestrians. It is about residents and visitors. It is about a quality of life. If we are advised, repeatedly, that the strength is our waterway. Eighty-five percent of the public that I represent lives within 10 miles of the water," Tonko said.
Union College hosted the third annual conference.
