At the 2014 North American International Auto Show, there were pickups, sports cars and hybrid vehicles that might surprise you. Car Coach Lauren Fix has the details.
The show started off with the announcement of the North American car and truck of the year. The winners are: the Chevy Corvette and the Chevy Silverado truck.
This year’s show is gearing up to be the largest in years and automakers will have alternative-fuel vehicles on display, but they are not expected to be in the spotlight as they have been in years past.
Instead, pickup trucks are once again taking center stage at this year’s show, including a new entry from each of the Detroit automakers.
The Ford F series pickup truck, this is the most important introduction of the nation's bestselling vehicle of any kind for the past 32 years. The new truck is made of aluminum, not just any aluminum, and military grade aluminum. It improves fuel economy by 5 mph, has more strength and is lighter. This is something that will be a new trend in pickup trucks.
The VW Golf R is the most powerful VW in the lineup and was released in Detroit, with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 290 hp and expected to earn 31 miles to the gallon on the highway. They are continuing the all-wheel-drive, as this is something that brings power and traction to the vehicle. All backed with an automatic transmission allowing for quicker shifting, 5.3 second 0-60 mph, with prices start at $34,990.
As the U.S. automotive industry continues to rebound, numerous high-ranking public officials, including U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, all walking around the show with the excitement and enthusiasm of the 2014 North American International Auto Show.
